Cycling tour in San Marino and Italy – for southerners!

From historic medieval towns to the beautiful Adriatic coast

Two countries, four cycling stages, and Italy at its absolute best!

Imagine pedalling through rolling green hills, turning into small medieval towns, and sitting down to a proper Italian lunch after some great kilometres on the bike. And the next day? New roads, new villages, and new culinary experiences await!

On this trip, we combine cycling in two countries – San Marino and Italy – with what the Italians do best: great food, enjoyable meals, and time to enjoy life along the way.

From the mountain peaks of San Marino to the beaches of the Adriatic Sea

We start in the medieval town of Verucchio and cycle via the microstate of San Marino to historic Urbino. From there, we continue through Marche's rolling hills, with small, winding roads and views that constantly tempt us to stop.

And the grand finale? We'll have that by the Adriatic Sea! Here, the legendary Strada Panoramica awaits, along with Italian coastal charm and perhaps a well-deserved dip after the day's ride.

Italian culinary delight and pleasant evenings

Along the way, we stay in four different places, from historic town settings to a beachfront hotel. The evenings are filled with local specialities, great conversations, and stories from the day's stage.

This will be a trip with real cycling, lots of Italian charm, and just the right amount of la dolce vita!

Quick trip overview

Four eventful cycling days await, featuring a wonderful mix of quiet country roads, rolling hills, historic towns, and Italian village life!

We cycle as a group, accompanied by Expa Travel's tour leader, on carefully selected routes through San Marino and the Italian Marche region. The terrain is varied and hilly, with plenty of scenic climbs and descents. Along the way, there will naturally be time for pleasant coffee stops, great lunches, and taking in the views from the occasional Italian piazza.

The stages range from approx. 55 to 95 km, with up to around 1,500 meters of elevation gain. On the day of departure, we also arrange a bike ride of approx. 75 km before concluding with lunch and transfer to the airport.

Who is this trip suitable for?

This trip is ideal for those who enjoy road cycling, thrive in hilly terrain, and appreciate combining physical activity with great culinary experiences and pleasant socializing.

You don't need to be in peak athletic shape, but you should have a solid fitness baseline and be accustomed to spending several hours on the bike. There will be quite a bit of climbing along the way, so some cycling training beforehand will make the experience even better.

We cycle together as a group, with time for both breaks and great experiences along the route.

Standard road bike or e-road bike?

You choose which type of bike suits you best!

If you enjoy feeling the burn in your legs and appreciate long days in hilly terrain, a standard road bike is a great choice.

If you want a little extra assistance on the climbs, you can rent an e-road bike. That way, you still get an active cycling holiday, but with the option to adjust the effort along the way.

Both types of bikes can be reserved during registration.

Four accommodations – four different experiences

We stay overnight at four different locations along the way, ranging from charming medieval towns to a beachfront hotel by the Adriatic Sea.

Each accommodation has its own unique character, allowing us to experience historic surroundings, local hospitality, and Italian culinary traditions. One of the locations even offers an overnight stay in an ancient fortress!

Luggage is transported between the accommodations, so you only need to carry the essentials on your bike.

Please note that we do not have a support vehicle on this trip.

A little about San Marino

Did you know that San Marino is considered the world's oldest surviving republic? According to tradition, it was founded as early as 301 AD!

The tiny microstate is completely surrounded by Italy and covers only about 61 km². With its approximately 34,000 inhabitants, it is one of Europe's smallest countries.

The capital, San Marino, is dramatically perched atop Monte Titano, featuring medieval towers, narrow streets, and views that leave a lasting impression.

The country has Italian as its official language and uses the euro, even though it is not a member of the EU.

Quite a unique country to cross off the list of places you have cycled!

Today, a truly fantastic cycling stage awaits through rolling hills, charming medieval towns, and a landscape that practically begs for an extra photo stop!

After a hearty breakfast, we get on our bikes and pedal towards the first highlight of the day: San Marino! The small republic is perched high in the mountains, with its capital spectacularly situated on a mountaintop. Day 3From Urbino to San Pietro – rolling hills and idyllic Italian villages

San Pietro i Umbria, Italia | Expa Travel

Today, we will truly experience the Italian countryside! Narrow, winding roads, green hills, and villages appearing between the crests—this is Italy at its absolute best!

We leave Urbino with a wonderful descent, followed by a few kilometers of relatively flat terrain. We must expect some traffic for the first twenty kilometers or so, but gradually the roads become quieter, and we reach deep into the countryside of the Marche region.

Here, an increasingly rolling landscape awaits, with small roads weaving through hills and valleys. Along the way, we stop for a good lunch break (included) before continuing higher up. The final kilometers offer several climbs and winding roads towards today's destination, San Pietro.

And what a place to end the cycling day! Here, our accommodation will be split between two locations—some in the old castle, others in hotel rooms by the restaurant. The place is especially known for its food: rustic, local dishes prepared with quality ingredients and genuine Italian passion for food.

The view is nothing to complain about either! From the heights, we look out over the beautiful, undulating landscape, and far in the distance, we glimpse the Adriatic Sea as a blue stripe on the horizon.

In the evening, we gather for a group dinner (included). After around 95 kilometers on the bike, the local specialties will surely taste even better!

Day 4From green hills to the Adriatic Sea – with Strada Panoramica as the grand finale

Gabicce Mare ved Adriaterhavskysten | Expa Travel

Today, we're heading all the way out to the Adriatic Sea! But before we can take off our cycling shoes and feel the sand between our toes, another fantastic stage through the Italian landscape awaits.

We start by following the ridges toward the medieval town of Corinaldo. Here, we cycle with sweeping views in all directions, and eventually, the Adriatic Sea appears on the horizon. Corinaldo is known for its well-preserved city walls and charming medieval streets—a perfect place for a cappuccino before we continue!

Next, we set our sights on the coastal town of Fano, where the landscape gradually opens up and the sea draws closer and closer. From here, we follow cycle paths along the Adriatic coast, with sea breezes, beaches, and Italian coastal life providing a lovely contrast to the mountains and hills of previous days.

But we are not quite done with the hills yet!

The final cycling experience of the day is the famous Strada Panoramica, a favorite among local cyclists. The road winds through the hilly coastal landscape, with spectacular viewpoints and curves that make the final kilometers an adventure in themselves. There will be climbs, fun descents, and plenty of reasons to stop for a photo!

We take a pleasant lunch break along the way (included) before finally rolling into Gabicce Mare, where we will spend the last night of the tour.

After checking in at the beach hotel, perhaps a well-deserved dip in the Adriatic Sea sounds tempting? In the evening, we gather for a final farewell dinner at the hotel's restaurant (included). A wonderful opportunity to toast to four eventful days in Italy, plenty of elevation gain, and great shared experiences!

The last day in Italy, but luckily we are not quite done with cycling just yet!

For early risers, perhaps a morning swim in the Adriatic Sea before breakfast appeals? Afterwards, we hop on our bikes for one last ride in the beautiful landscape around Gabicce Mare.

This time, the route heads inland, where we visit the charming medieval towns of Gradara and Saludecio, among others. More of the small, winding roads we have grown so fond of over the past few days await here, complete with rolling hills, lovely villages, and stunning views along the way.

Back at the hotel, we gather for a late, shared lunch (included). One final opportunity to enjoy Italian food and great company before we have to pack up and head for home.

Around 4:00 PM, the bus departs for the airport, where the flight leaves at 8:05 PM. Dinner on this day is on your own and is not included.
