Bicycle trips
Italy
Finally ready for a new cycling adventure with the group of friends! In September, the trip goes to beautiful Sicily, an island made for cycling. Here, hilly mountain roads, spectacular landscapes, and authentic Italian culture await, all seen from the bicycle saddle.
Sicily offers winding mountain roads with views towards Etna, charming villages known from the Godfather movies, and an atmosphere that must be experienced. The island's unique mix of history, nature, and tasteful food & wine makes this an experience far out of the ordinary. 5 days of fantastic routes, wonderful meals, and social gathering!
As always, we have planned exciting bike rides. This time with more spectacular views than ever. Sicily is known for its hilly terrain, so you should expect both uphills and downhills along the way. Hopefully, we will also take a refreshing dip in the Mediterranean, either before or after our rides.
The bike rides will lead to small mountain villages you might already know from 'The Godfather' movies, among others. We will cycle on winding roads in landscapes that can easily take your breath away.
One of the days, we cycle all the way up to 1800 meters above sea level, up Europe's most active volcano: Mount Etna. The volcano dominates this part of Sicily. It is powerful to cycle through the areas where lava flows from various eruptions have passed.
We also take the trip over the mountain, via Castelmola, to a small vineyard run by a Swedish couple who turned their dream of owning a vineyard into reality. They have invited us for a tour, tasting, and a light lunch at their home.
Sicily stands out a bit from the rest of Italy!

Arrival in Catania approx. 7:20 PM. Plan for a transfer of over 60 minutes to the hotel below Taormina.
Check-in at the hotel before a joint welcome dinner in the hotel’s restaurant.

Those who wish can start the day with a morning swim in the pool / ocean.
After breakfast, we get on our bikes and head north. We follow the coast for a couple of kilometers before turning off the main road. From here, it goes uphill towards the town of Roccafiorita. Several small towns that are perfect for a short coffee stop. Fantastic views.
If we make it all the way up to Monte Kalfa at 1000 meters above sea level, the view will be spectacular!
We continue our journey on truly small, narrow roads high in the mountains, all the way to the town of Savoca. A town you might recognize from some of 'The Godfather' movies. Here we will stop for lunch (not included). A cool place in a beautiful landscape.
We then roll back down towards the coast, and along the way, we consider whether our legs will agree to the climb up to Forza d’Agro. A climb of approx. 5 km, in hairpin turns. The gelato (ice cream) on the small piazza in Forza d’Agro tastes extra good, guaranteed!
Back at the hotel, there will be an opportunity for an after-bike gathering around the pool. Alternatively, we go down to the beach and enjoy a late afternoon with an evening swim and a drink at the small bar.
Joint dinner at a cozy restaurant in Taormina (not included). We take the cable car up to the town. (Not incl.)

After a relaxing morning with a wonderful breakfast, we head towards the Alcantara River and the valley leading us to the town of Graniti. We cycle onwards to the small winery Strumbarello. Here we meet a Swedish couple who have followed their dream and created their Italian dream place, complete with their own wine and olive oil production. The hosts will show us around and offer a light lunch where we also get to taste the wines.
From Strumbarello, we choose whether we want to cycle over the mountain on fantastic narrow roads completely off the beaten track, or if we take the somewhat easier route down into the valley and along the sea.
A quick shower and change of clothes before "after-bike" on the cozy beach right below the hotel.
Dinner at a local restaurant within walking distance of the hotel (Not included).

Those who wish can start the day early with a morning swim in the pool / ocean.
Today we are heading a bit inland on the island. Right after breakfast, we head south along the coast for a couple of kilometers before starting the climb towards the town of Linguaglossa. We take a short coffee stop before cycling further up.
Along the way, you can see several places where Etna has had regular eruptions over the last thousand years. The areas where the lava flow has run previously are now very lush. Some of Southern Italy's best grapes are grown here, producing powerful wines!
We continue in this strange landscape, heading up Mount Etna, to approx. 1800 meters above sea level. The Giro d’Italia has also passed through here several times.
After cycling as far as the road goes and admiring the landscape, we roll down a bit to a mountain cabin where we stop for a delicious, well-deserved lunch (included).
Full and satisfied, we roll many kilometers down towards the coast, before heading back towards Taormina and our hotel.
If we are back in good time, we can manage a swim before dinner. Local pizza dinner (included).

The transfer bus departs from the hotel to the airport at 4:00 PM. Flight departure at 6:55 PM.
If you wish to cycle on this day as well, we recommend a scenic route north along the coast. Your form today determines today’s stage.
Alternatively, spend some lovely hours on a sunbed on the beach or by the pool.
The program is preliminary, changes may occur.
