The route in short
The trip starts in the North-East Dolomites in Italy, where for the first part of the journey you follow the Drau River through the valley of the same name. The stages then continue across the border to Austria, and further through the Gail Valley on comfortable cycle paths.
After a short detour to the Italian border town of Tarvisio, you continue across the border into Slovenia. The picturesque and beautiful Lake Bled, located at the foot of the Julian Alps, is an ideal place to rest before further transport to the southern side of the Alps. More specifically, to the famous Italian wine region of Collio in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. The former capital of the Lombardy region, Cividale, is also well worth a visit.
The final stage of the journey leads you through spectacular landscapes down towards the Adriatic coast. On the last day, you cycle along the coast all the way to Habsburg in Trieste, Italy.
The trip from the Dolomites to Trieste is a relatively easy ride. The stages run along cycle paths and quiet side roads, passing through small villages and a picturesque landscape with very limited traffic.
