One of Europe's most underrated high-mountain areas?
Welcome to one of Europe's most beautiful – and most underrated – mountain areas. Slovenia and the Julian Alps offer dramatic limestone peaks, crystal-clear alpine lakes, green high-mountain plateaus, and a unique network of historic mountain huts.
And towering in the middle of this landscape is the country's highest mountain – Mount Triglav (2864 m a.s.l.) – a national symbol and a destination for every mountain enthusiast.
Slovenia is one of those countries that surprises you from the very first moment. Small in size, but with a variety that allows you to have breakfast in the Alps, hike through incredibly beautiful, green valleys and waterfalls in the middle of the day – and catch an espresso by the Adriatic Sea in the evening.
At the foot of the Julian Alps lies Bled. A small town of around 8,000 inhabitants. Known for its crystal-clear lake, island church, and the castle that towers over the town. This trip begins here, at a leisurely pace – with time to settle in, stroll along the lake, and see what Bled has to offer.
But already the following day, the journey goes up into the heights, and the landscape changes character.
Quick facts about the trip
This is a trip for intermediate to advanced mountain hikers with good experience from longer day stages in alpine terrain. On this trip, you will walk in the Julian Alps – at your own pace, through forests, mountain pastures, and open plateaus, and further towards higher and more open mountain terrain. Along the way, you pass areas with clear traces of the First World War, beautiful waterfalls, and alpine lakes.
The last few days, the trip goes down from the high mountains to the valley, via the famous Savica waterfall, as well as stopping by villages in the Bohinj valley before finishing at the final destination, Ribcev Laz. After 6 days on foot, you can now look back at the mountains you have crossed this week. Job well done!
