Crossing Norway's 3rd largest glacier – Folgefonna on skis

Hardanger and Folgefonna at their best

The trips in 2026 have been completed. Get in touch with us for any interest in the same trip in 2027.

Two days. One glacier. An experience you will never forget.

Do you want to feel the sensation of going from high mountain plateaus to the fjord – on skis?

Crossing the Folgefonna glacier in spring conditions is one of the wildest things you can do in Norwegian nature. Here you get white plains as far as the eye can see, mighty glacier landscapes, and views from Hardangervidda in the east to the ocean in the west. We would claim that this is one of the most beautiful things you can do on skis in Norway.

We move through open and magnificent high mountain terrain. Along the way, you feel the contrast between the raw and the quiet – between the wind over the glacier and the total tranquility when we stop, perhaps just to enjoy the moment of silence or for a food break. Here there is space. Here there is a view. Here is the real deal.

For those who like to use their body and be out in the grand landscape, this is a trip you will remember for a long time.

If you wish to have accommodation in the area the day before the start of the trip, we can assist with this. We can also assist with transport to the meeting point if needed.

This is a very popular trip so it pays to book a spot early. If snow conditions allow, we will set up the trip during the Pentecost holiday weekend as well.

Day 1Towards the glacier plateau and mountain peace

Høyfjellsro på breplatået på Folgefonna | Expa Travel

With/ Overnight stay at Holmaskjer cabin/ Approx. 13 km

We meet in the small village of Skare, south of Odda in Hardanger. From there we travel onwards to Markjelke by minibus. This is where the adventure begins.
Skis on, and we ski steadily upwards towards Hardingeskaret. Gradually the landscape opens up, and we get a view towards the fjord and mountains to the west. The pace is calm and steady – we have a long way to go, but we are also going to enjoy it.

Across the glacier plateau we ski with plenty of time for breaks, lunch (packed lunch not included) and the small moments that make the trip special.
The goal for the day is Holmaskjer Turisthytte (1565 m.a.s.l.), an unstaffed cabin with a spectacular location in the middle of the high mountains. The cabin is situated on a small islet in the glacier landscape, hence the name Holmaskjer.
Here we prepare dinner together (included), lower our shoulders and let the peace set in.
On clear days we can experience a truly special sunset over the glacier. These are those kind of evenings where you don't talk much – you just watch.

Day 2Across southern Folgefonna

Holmaskjær turisthytte (1565 moh) - Folgefonna på ski | Expa Travel

If we are lucky, we will experience a magical sunrise – perhaps outside the cabin wall with a coffee cup in hand?

We start the day early. After breakfast, making our packed lunch, as well as packing and tidying the cabin, we set off on a longer leg across the southern part of the glacier.
Here the landscape truly opens up. We pass the glacier's highest point, 1662 m.a.s.l., and get magnificent views of the Rosendal Alps and the fjords far below.

The terrain is gently undulating before we gradually begin the descent off the glacier area. When we come down from the glacier, a longer descent awaits. Long, nice downhills. We will take a lunch break at a suitable place along the way (packed lunch included).
When there are a few km left, we reach a tractor road, which we follow all the way until we finish the trip at Espeland.

A long and eventful day – a true journey from glacier to fjord.
We finish the tour where we parked our cars.

Dinner on your own (not included).

The program is preliminary, changes may occur.
