Adventure in Northern Norway w/Roar & Christin

Friends' friends-trip to Vesterålen

From Vesterålen to Tromsø – with hikes, visits to fishing villages, the Hurtigruten and more

Unique nature, social companionship, and fresh experiences. At the end of June 2027, Roar and Kristin invite you to a friends-of-friends trip up north. This time the journey goes to Vesterålen, where we will experience Northern Norway on foot, at sea, and through good stories.

Northern Norway from the front row

We could have traveled to many places, but we have chosen an area that more and more people are opening their eyes to. In the north of the country, where the mountains meet the sea, lies Vesterålen with its very own character. Here we find pristine white beaches, mountains rising from the sea, small fishing villages, and over 1,300 islands. This is an area that offers great hikes and powerful impressions – simply a fantastic piece of Norway.

Mountains, fishing villages, and good stories

Vesterålen has over 200 marked hiking trails. Many of them are easily accessible, and regardless of which hike we choose, the sea is never far away. Here we find traces of generations who lived off the sea and the land around them. We will visit the fishing villages of Nyksund and Stø, follow in Queen Sonja's footsteps on the Queen's Route (Dronningruta), and learn more about life out on the edge of the ocean.

Quick facts about the trip

It will be an active journey, where among other things we will follow the Queen's Route between the fishing villages of Stø and Nyksund. One of the Queen's favorite hikes.
We will experience Andøya, which has some of Norway's finest beaches. One of Norway's many beautiful National Tourist Routes runs along Andøya, and if we are lucky we can see seals, whales, and eagles.
The ocean is a natural part of living in this part of the country, so we must also head out onto the water. We won't go out into the open ocean, but stay inshore, among sheltered coves and cosy trading posts in a fantastic 1postcard landscape1.

Facts about Vesterålen

Vesterålen is an archipelago in northern Nordland, on the edge of the Norwegian Sea. Nowhere in the world does the Gulf Stream come closer to land than right here. The marine areas are rich in fish, and off Andøya there are good opportunities to see whales all year round. Well-known places in Vesterålen include Stokmarknes, the birthplace of the Hurtigruten, Andenes with its whale safari, Bleik with its chalk-white beach, and Nyksund – one of Northern Norway's most charming fishing villages.

Our base will be in Sortland

We will stay for three nights at the Scandic Sortland Hotel, a modern hotel that opened in 2021. The hotel enjoys a great location on the waterfront, right in the center of Sortland – the largest town in Vesterålen – with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. We will live well here.
Sortland is known as "The Blue City by the Strait". Many of the buildings in the center are painted in different shades of blue, and several of the facades are decorated with poems and texts written by youth from Vesterålen in collaboration with the author Lars Saabye Christensen.

Voyage with Hurtigruten

After four wonderful days in Vesterålen our journey continues, first to Harstad for an overnight stay there, at Scandic Harstad. Then we board Hurtigruten the next morning to sail to beautiful Tromsø. Along the way, we enjoy the legendary lunch on board.

We arrive in the Paris of the North in the early afternoon, and after checking in at Scandic Ishavshotel, there will be, among other things, a joint city walk. For those who wish, we can take the cable car to Storsteinen.
The evening dinner concludes at the legendary Rorbua. Many stories have been told there, some better than others!

Day 2Hike to Måtinden

Måtinden i Vesterålen | Expa Travel

Today the trip goes to Bleik, which is located on Andøya. Here we hike to one of the most beautiful places in Vesterålen, to Måtinden. Måtinden is no more than 408 meters above sea level, but offers a magnificent view of many small lakes, the ocean, "Caribbean beaches" and Bleiksøya with its puffins. We finish the hike in the village of Bleik. Relatively easy terrain.

We will have lunch at a suitable place along the way (not included).

On the way home we make a stop at Andenes, located at the northernmost point of Andøya, where we will see, among other things, the famous red lighthouse from 1859. Perhaps we will hear about 'Manndrapardagen'. Just outside Andenes is also the Andøya Space Center.
On the way back, we drive on the National Tourist Route along Andøya's outer side. An area where you should scan for both eagles and whales, imagine if we were to be so lucky…

Day 3Boat trip to Øksnes, Tinden and Skipnes

Vi ser Nyksund fra båt | Expa Travel

We are heading out to sea. There may be changes in the program regarding where the journey goes.
A popular trip is the round trip in Øksnes Vestbygd. We start in Myre, which is the municipal center of Øksnes. Here we board the local boat, and then we embark on the journey in this beautiful archipelago.

The first stop will be Tinden. Tinden was a so-called "fishing station" for fishermen from the islands further inland. Here they lived in fisherman's cabins during the winter fishing. This has now been preserved, and gives us an authentic testimony of a vibrant trading post from a bygone era. We will have lunch at a suitable place along the way (not included).

Then a historical walk in easy terrain awaits over to Skipnes. There we visit a beautiful fishing village that was restored in the 1990s. Here there is both a small shop and a restaurant. It is like stepping back in time. Then the local boat arrives on its route and takes us back to Myre.

At 19:30 there will be a joint dinner in the hotel restaurant (included).

Day 4The Queen's Route (Dronningruta)

Dronningruta i Vesterålen, Norge | Expa Travel

We are going to the two fishing villages Stø and Nyksund in Øksnes municipality.
Our own Queen Sonja, known as an avid hiker in Norwegian nature, came there in 1994. "I have left a part of my heart here," the Queen told NRK at the time.
The hike from Stø to Nyksund was named after her, and the 12 kilometers have since been voted Norway's most beautiful hike. The route has everything Vesterålen can offer; beautiful coast and shorelines, small cozy villages, and fantastic mountains.

Nyksund had its heyday in the early 1900s. It was a bustling place at that time, and it was the second largest fishing village in Vesterålen. As new technology was introduced in relation to both size and engines on fishing boats, the fishing village was almost completely depopulated in the 1970s. With relocation grants from the government, Nyksund eventually became a ghost town. In the late 1980s, some artists came to Nyksund, and slowly but surely, the place has come back to life. Lunch at a suitable place along the way (not included).

After the hike, we head towards Norway's largest island, Hinnøya. Harstad is located here. We arrive there in the afternoon, we check in at Scandic Harstad Hotell for dinner and a good night's sleep.

At 19:30 there will be a joint dinner at the hotel (included).

Today there will be an early breakfast, as we need to board the Hurtigruten to take part in a leg of what is described as the world's most beautiful sea voyage. We board the Hurtigruten ship leaving from Harstad to Tromsø at 07:45.
Along the way, we pass beautiful Gisundet. Onboard we enjoy the legendary lunch in one of the ship's three restaurants (included).

We arrive in Tromsø around 14:00 where we check in at Scandic Ishavshotel. Then we will experience the 'Paris of the North' where we, among other things, take the cable car, and one of the two gondolas named Seal and Bear, to the top of Storsteinen. Magical views and opportunities to go for a nice walk. For the fittest, it is possible to walk the Sherpa stairs to the top, which are 1200 steps built by sherpas from Nepal.

In the evening, there will be atmosphere & food at the well-known place Rorbua (included).
