Quick facts about the trip
It will be an active journey, where among other things we will follow the Queen's Route between the fishing villages of Stø and Nyksund. One of the Queen's favorite hikes.
We will experience Andøya, which has some of Norway's finest beaches. One of Norway's many beautiful National Tourist Routes runs along Andøya, and if we are lucky we can see seals, whales, and eagles.
The ocean is a natural part of living in this part of the country, so we must also head out onto the water. We won't go out into the open ocean, but stay inshore, among sheltered coves and cosy trading posts in a fantastic 1postcard landscape1.
Facts about Vesterålen
Vesterålen is an archipelago in northern Nordland, on the edge of the Norwegian Sea. Nowhere in the world does the Gulf Stream come closer to land than right here. The marine areas are rich in fish, and off Andøya there are good opportunities to see whales all year round. Well-known places in Vesterålen include Stokmarknes, the birthplace of the Hurtigruten, Andenes with its whale safari, Bleik with its chalk-white beach, and Nyksund – one of Northern Norway's most charming fishing villages.
Our base will be in Sortland
We will stay for three nights at the Scandic Sortland Hotel, a modern hotel that opened in 2021. The hotel enjoys a great location on the waterfront, right in the center of Sortland – the largest town in Vesterålen – with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. We will live well here.
Sortland is known as "The Blue City by the Strait". Many of the buildings in the center are painted in different shades of blue, and several of the facades are decorated with poems and texts written by youth from Vesterålen in collaboration with the author Lars Saabye Christensen.
Voyage with Hurtigruten
After four wonderful days in Vesterålen our journey continues, first to Harstad for an overnight stay there, at Scandic Harstad. Then we board Hurtigruten the next morning to sail to beautiful Tromsø. Along the way, we enjoy the legendary lunch on board.
We arrive in the Paris of the North in the early afternoon, and after checking in at Scandic Ishavshotel, there will be, among other things, a joint city walk. For those who wish, we can take the cable car to Storsteinen.
The evening dinner concludes at the legendary Rorbua. Many stories have been told there, some better than others!
