Lake Constance Circular – a cycling tour in Germany, Switzerland and Austria

On the border between Germany, Switzerland and Austria, we find one of Europe's most beautiful lakes – Lake Constance / Bodensee. A beautiful lake framed by stunningly beautiful nature, featuring cozy towns, the Alps, valleys, lovely houses and wonderful people. Cycling on the great and well-maintained cycle paths along the lake at your own pace is simply a great experience.
The three countries have collaborated on a continuous cycle path all around Lake Constance. Here you will experience historical cultural gems and idyllic villages, and there are beautiful vineyards and orchards as far as the eye can see. There are plenty of swimming spots and places to eat along the way, so remember your swimwear and visa card.
Look forward to a unique cycling tour far away from the hustle and bustle of tourist crowds!

You cycle on your own, allowing you to set your own pace.

The journey takes 6 days, with 5 nights of accommodation.

Quick facts about Lake Constance
Lake Constance/Bodensee/Bodensjøen – a beloved place is known by many names.
The lake is 63 km long, and borders Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Geographically, a distinction is made between the areas Obersee (the main part between Konstanz and Bregenz), Überlinger See and Untersee, which is connected to the rest of Lake Constance through the river Seerhein.
While Untersee is a typically shallow lake, Obersee reaches a depth of 253 m and its greatest width of 14 km. At 147 m deep, Überlinger See is also relatively deep and offers interesting, but not completely hazard-free diving areas.

Surrounded by holiday towns on all sides, it is a summer destination for sailing, windsurfing and swimming. The Bodensee-Radweg cycling path of approx. 260 km surrounds the entire lake.

Quick facts about the trip

On this unique cycling tour, we use paths/roads where you can experience the quiet, peaceful, and picturesque inland on the German and Swiss sides of the lake. This allows you to avoid the crowds of cyclists riding directly along the lake. The routes have been carefully planned with a desire to avoid 'tourist hotspots' and the congestion that can easily take away the magic of the landscape.
You will therefore not be using the "official" cycle paths on busy roads, but rather cycling on forest and meadow paths. However, you will cycle a bit on the official cycle path along Lake Constance on the Austrian side of the lake on day 4. This is because the Alps here go almost all the way down to the lake, making it impossible to cycle inland. This stage is nevertheless beautiful, as it passes through the Rhine nature reserve.

Who is the trip suitable for

Easy – Moderate

Rating a self-guided cycling tour is difficult. What you find difficult or easy depends on your own fitness and condition. However, what we can inform you about for this specific tour is as follows:
The stages lead you through a gently undulating landscape on forest and meadow paths. The total distance is approx. 213-220 km. Some days you will enjoy very flat terrain, while other days the itinerary leads through rolling hills with great panoramic views and fantastic landscapes. To cycle through the picturesque idyll of the inland, you will need to put in a little extra effort on some of the days.
If you are unsure of your own fitness and condition, we recommend an e-bike.

Climate

The climate in the Lake Constance region is very mild with warm summers and moderate winters. It is often compared to the Mediterranean climate. Warm and sunny. A great climate for fruit and wine production. In spring, millions of fruit trees and spring flowers bloom, covering the meadows in rural areas.
Summer and autumn are particularly attractive due to the blossoming cherry and apple trees, as well as the lush vineyards.
From April to October, the weather is ideal for cycling in this region. Please check the local conditions before arrival.

Arrival in Überlingen (Germany) and your hotel for the night. Your room will be ready for check-in from 15:00.

In the afternoon, we recommend a stroll through the old imperial city of Überlingen. The contours of the medieval town, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries, can be clearly seen even today. Mighty gates and walls, carved out of the surrounding rock, have been well preserved.
The heart of the old town lies around the “Hofstatt” square, with the town hall and the Gothic Cathedral of St. Nicholas close by. The cathedral is not only beautiful on the outside; inside, you will find several exquisite works of art created by woodcarver Jörg Zürn.

Lunch and dinner on your own (not included).

Meersburg er en av byene du sykler innom | Expa Travel

Suitcases must be delivered to reception every morning before 09:00. Inform the hotel staff that your luggage will be collected by the Bodensee Cycle Route Service. If you have pre-ordered rental bikes, these will be delivered before 09:30 this morning.

The first cycling stage starts in Überlingen along slightly hilly paths. Fantastic views of the lake await as you cycle towards the magnificent Birnau church. This rococo church has almost become a symbol of the entire Lake Constance landscape and is one of the most visited sites around the lake.
The stage then continues to the town of Meersburg. Surrounded by steep vineyards, this is one of the most romantic medieval towns along the entire lake. Charming alleys and beautiful, historic houses lead the way up to Meersburg Castle (Germany), the castle that still dominates the town today.

From Meersburg, you continue towards Salem (Germany). There, you will find the former Cistercian monastery, which is still the residence of the Margrave of Baden and the seat of the world-famous boarding school.
The stage to Salem runs along field, forest, and meadow paths, through a virtually untouched landscape. You will also see the hills, also known as “drumlins,” which bear witness to the ice age. This section of the cycle path is part of the “Prelate’s Trail,” which was used by monks and priests when traveling from Salem Abbey to Birnau to hold mass there.

Overnight stay at Gasthof Schwanen *** / Salem Castle (or equivalent). Gasthof Schwanen (Gasthaus zum Schwanen) was built in 1665 as a monastery building. Throughout history, Salem Abbey has become Salem Castle, and more recently, a restaurant, monastery tavern, wine bar, hotel, and museum café have also opened there. So much history!

Wasserburg is a historic peninsula, with the onion dome of the Baroque church of St. George as an iconic landmark in the region.

As you cycle further from Wasserburg to Lindau, you can enjoy a traffic-free route all the way to your new accommodation in Lindau harbor. The harbor entrance with its lighthouse and Bavarian lion is one of the most popular postcard motifs of Lake Constance.
