Borgar's Friend Trip: Hiking in the Dolomites, Alta Via 1 - self-guided

NOTE: This is a private tour, and is therefore only for specially invited guests.

Hiking in the Dolomites – on Italy's most famous cairn route

This is a varied hike through some of the Dolomites' most spectacular places. On this tour, you follow the classic Alta Via 1, one of Italy's most famous hiking routes. Along the way, iconic locations such as Lago di Braies, Lagazuoi, and Cinque Torri await – with views of some of the Dolomites' most spectacular rock formations.
The route takes you from the Royal Hotel in the center of Cortina to overnight stays in traditional mountain huts. Here, genuine mountain coziness and simple, good dishes await after the day's hike. You walk on well-marked trails through green valleys, steep passes, and open mountain plateaus. Along the way, you pass both remnants from the First World War and natural landmarks such as Lago Federa.

Varied daily stages

The daily stages vary from leisurely hikes of 2 hours to longer stages of 6 – 7 hours. Some stages are demanding, while others allow more time to take in both the landscape and the atmosphere.
Above 2000 meters above sea level, you get a feeling of being close to the wildest and most beautiful sides of the Dolomites.

Starting point

The starting point is Venice, where you easily take a bus or rental car onwards to Cortina d’Ampezzo – the gateway to the Dolomites. From here, five days of unforgettable hikes along Alta Via 1 await you, before you wrap up the tour back in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Who is the trip for

The daily stages last for 2 – 7 hours, and the trip is suitable for anyone in normal physical shape. You do not need any climbing experience, but it is wise to be comfortable carrying a backpack and walking several days in a row.

Quick facts about the trip

This trip is suitable for those who want to hike classic stages on the Alta Via 1 – the Dolomites' most famous hiking route. Here you get a great combination of high-mountain atmosphere, varied terrain, and accommodation at both mountain huts and hotels along the way.

Along the way, green valleys, open mountain passes, lakes, and sections with dramatic cliffs await. You will also pass through areas shaped by World War I, where old forts and fortifications still stand as powerful historical memories.
A perfect trip for those who want to experience the Dolomites up close – at your own pace.

Day 2Lago di Braies - Rifugio Biella - Rifugio Sennes

Pragser Wildsee - en av Dolomittenes mest iconiske innsjøer | Expa Travel

After a good breakfast at the hotel, you take the local bus to Dobbiaco / Toblach and from there another bus to Lago di Braies / Pragser Wildsee (Lago di Braies / Pragser Wildsee / Lake Braies / Lake Prags – a beloved child has many names. These are four names for the same thing: the most beautiful lake in the Dolomites).
This is where the first stage of your hike along the Alta Via 1 begins, at the iconic and perhaps most photographed green mountain lake in the Dolomites, at 1494 m above sea level.
The first part goes steeply uphill through pine forest and later open landscape through stones and scree with a nice view of the lake behind you.

After a while, the trail winds further upwards in hairpin turns. The landscape becomes a bit more alpine and barren. Rifugio Biella is a good option for a little rest after the uphill climbs, and perhaps also a lunch with a nice drink (not included). This is a classic stop on the Alta Via 1. The mountain hut is located at 2327 m above sea level.

The hike onwards towards Rifugio Sennes is relatively easy compared to today's steep start. You will sleep here tonight.

Then there is a steady and long climb up the Fanes Valley, a very beautiful, green valley with rushing streams and wild mountains. We recommend a break / lunch at Rifugio Fanes, 2060 m above sea level, before the final climb.

Furthermore, you will walk towards Forcella del Lago (the pass), with dramatic mountain formations on all sides. The final climb towards today's accommodation is steep and tough, but so worth it! Perhaps an hour in the sauna at the top, 2752 m above sea level, is tempting (approx. 25–30 euros, not included). The sunset here is fantastic!

Rifugio Averau is located on a plateau at 2413 m above sea level, between the mountains Novolau and Lagazuoi. The mountain hut is known for its excellent food and not least the spectacular view of the Dolomites.
