Team Cyan Nord – training trip on bike in Italy

Cycling from the Adriatic coast to Italian medieval towns

From coastal roads to medieval towns by bike

From Gabicce Mare, the roads quickly lead away from the Adriatic Sea and into the rolling landscape between Marche and Emilia-Romagna. Here, flat sections alternate with long, gentle climbs, small villages, and medieval towns that appear on the hills along the way.

Urbino, a UNESCO World Heritage site, San Marino, Gradara, San Leo, Saludecio, and Mondaino are some of the places we cycle to or pass along the way. And once the day's kilometers are completed, Gabicce Mare and the Adriatic Sea await down by the coast.

Full-service bike hotel

Our base for the week is the small town of Gabicce Mare, in the far north of Marche and on the border with Emilia-Romagna. Here we stay at Hotel Marinella, a cozy, family-run hotel just a few steps from the beach.

The hotel is well-equipped for cyclists, with secure bike storage and everything we need before and after the day's ride. The rental bikes, newer Giant TCR models, are delivered directly to the hotel and are ready for use. You can find more information about the bikes further down the page.

After the bike ride, it is just a short distance to the beach, a swim in the Adriatic Sea, and a quiet afternoon before we gather around the table again. A week with many kilometers in your legs – and plenty of time for everything that belongs to a trip to Italy.

Medieval towns, trattoria lunches and the beach

The rolling landscape between Marche and Emilia-Romagna offers exactly the variety we want on a training trip. From the coast, the roads head inland between hills, vineyards and small villages, with both flat sections and climbs that eventually make themselves felt in the legs.

Along the way, we cycle through a landscape where medieval towns sit on the hills above us. Saludecio, San Leo, Mondaino and Urbino – the latter on the UNESCO World Heritage List – are among the places in the area, along with the small republic of San Marino. Some days there will be many altitude meters, other days slightly flatter terrain.

And this is Italy, so the breaks are part of the day. An espresso in the square, a cold drink along the way or a good lunch at a local trattoria before we pedal on towards Gabicce Mare.

Both cycling shoes and flip-flops

When the bikes are parked at the hotel, the day is not necessarily over either. Hotel Marinella is practically on the beach, so on days we are back early enough, it is just a few steps down to the Adriatic Sea. A swim, some time in the sun lounger and legs up before we gather for dinner.

We have the same base all week, so the suitcase can remain untouched while we set out on new routes from the hotel every day. This gives a nice rhythm to the days: breakfast, cycling, small and big experiences along the way – and back to Gabicce Mare when the day's kilometers are completed.

Day 1-8Weekly program

On the arrival day, there will be a briefing of the week's program before the welcome dinner.

Every evening at 19:00, anyone who wishes can gather for a joint aperitif in the bar – where tomorrow's route choices will also be reviewed. Here you will also get many good tips along the way.

We plan for different groups each day, with varying distances / elevation gain, all based on daily form and weather. We expect to cycle between 70 - 150 km per day (different distances for the various groups).
The area is hilly, providing opportunities for highly varied routes.

Only a few kilometers from the coast, the traffic decreases noticeably. In other words, you can expect great roads with little traffic - in a stunningly beautiful landscape.
