Cycling tour in Tuscany and hiking in Cinque Terre

From Tuscany to Cinque Terre – by bike and on foot

Cycling Tour in Tuscany and Hiking in Cinque Terre

This active trip combines a cycling tour in Tuscany with hiking in Cinque Terre. From Lucca, you cycle through the Tuscan landscape, past vineyards and small medieval towns, and onwards towards the Ligurian coast. Along the way, varied cycling stages, pleasant lunch stops, and plenty of time to enjoy Italian food and wine await.

In Cinque Terre, you swap your bike for hiking shoes and walk between the colorful villages along the coast. The tour is self-guided, so you cycle and walk at your own pace.
Expa Travel arranges hotels, luggage transport, bike rental, maps, and routes.

It is difficult to choose a favorite among Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Fortunately, you don't have to choose – on this trip, you get to experience all of Cinque Terre.

Quick facts about the trip

Here you get two quite different parts of Italy on the same trip. First, a few days on a bike in Tuscany, where the stages take you through small villages and wine regions, allowing plenty of time for stops along the way.

Then, Cinque Terre and the hike between Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore await. The trails follow the dramatic coast, with steep vineyards, small villages, and the Mediterranean Sea right below.

The bike first. The hiking shoes after. And Italy all the way.

On your own

This is a self-guided tour where you cycle and hike on your own. You set your own pace and choose when you want to take a break or stop for a bit longer along the way.

Expa Travel arranges the practicalities with hotels, luggage transport, and bike rental. When the bike is handed over and adjusted, you will receive an overview of the week's program from our local partner in Italy.

Starting point of the tour

The tour starts in the medieval town of Lucca in Tuscany. From here, you cycle towards the coast, with Pisa, Alpi Apuane, and the long beaches of Versilia along the route, among other highlights.

On the way towards Cinque Terre, some truly scenic stages also await. From the mountains above the coast, you get panoramic views of Liguria and the Mediterranean before the cycling portion of the tour concludes.

The daily stages are 60–90 kilometers and 750–1200 meters of elevation gain, so this is a trip for those who enjoy being active while also taking the time to stop along the way.

And then there is the food. The cycling and hiking trips should be combined with plenty of time around the table – Italian food, local dishes, and wine are a natural part of the journey through Tuscany and Liguria.

You also do not have to walk the entire way. Trains run between the villages and back to Monterosso, making it easy to shorten today's stage if desired.
