The Julian Alps

The Julian Alps, also known as the Slovenian Alps, are a spectacular mountain range stretching from northeastern Italy to Slovenia and are part of the Alps. The highest peak, Triglav, towers at 2,864 meters above sea level and is a symbol of Slovenia.

The mountain range, named after Julius Caesar, is part of the Southern Limestone Alps. Large parts of the mountain range lie within Triglav National Park, Slovenia's only national park and a popular destination for mountain enthusiasts.

A hike off the beaten track, along forest paths and mountain trails, always with Slovenia's highest mountain, Mount Triglav, in sight. Beautiful, wild, steep peaks everywhere you turn.

The hike goes through lovely alpine pastures along the hills near Lake Bohinj. Perhaps you stop to taste some of the local cheeses sold at the farms you pass. Eventually, the ascent towards some of the spectacular mountain peaks begins. Even if you have hiked in the Alps before, we think this view will surprise you!

Few people hike in this part of Triglav National Park (Slovenia's only national park).
When the mountain hut appears on the mountainside, you also see the peak of Mount Triglav (2864 m above sea level). Should you wish (and have enough strength left), you can continue the hike for an extra hour and enjoy the sunset from the top – magical view!

Eventually, you arrive at a fantastic mountain pass, where you take a break to enjoy the best view of the entire trip (over Mount Triglav). Here you have the chance to climb a fantastic peak (1 hour extra and 250 m elevation gain), from where you look over to both the Italian and Austrian Alps.
You buy and eat lunch along the way at one of the mountain huts you pass on the road (not included).

On the way down again, you walk on the Via Alpina trail, which leads you through the valley of the Seven Triglav Lakes. You might see marmots relaxing on the sunny side of the rocks. And if you don't spot them, you will definitely hear them…

You are transported by minibus for the final stretch to the hotel.

The 3-day long hike concludes with an unforgettable swim in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Bohinj, Slovenia's largest lake. After checking in, you will likely still have some time to explore Lake Bohinj on your own.

The first stop will be at Lake Bled. Perhaps even more beautiful in reality than in pictures.
You walk up to a viewpoint that offers a fantastic overview of the lake, the church, and the castle on the island. All the while with the beautiful Karawanks Alps in the background.

Back at Lake Bled, you have the opportunity for a quick swim before being transported further towards the famous Vrsic mountain pass.
The road up to the mountain pass, built by Russian prisoners during World War I, is a perfect starting point for today's hike.

If you thought Slovenia couldn't be more beautiful – wait until you descend to the other side of the mountain pass, into the Soca Valley. Here you will find the greatest biodiversity in the country, with emerald green water, dense forests, and the largest selection of outdoor experiences in Slovenia.
The cheerful small town of Bovec is the center, as well as the country's outdoor adventure capital. And this is your place of stay for the next two nights.

Eventually, the view opens up towards the Bohinj Valley. Framed by mountains, and where you can glimpse the lake in the distance.

On the way down, the route goes through the historic village of Studor, known for its traditional farmyards and living cultural history. Here you get a glimpse of Slovenian rural life before continuing along the path towards today's goal: Bohinj.

The hike concludes at Lake Bohinj, beautifully situated in the heart of Triglav National Park. The contrast between high mountains, cultural landscapes, and the mirror-like lake makes this a varied and very atmospheric day on foot.

At the western end of the lake, the hike goes to the iconic Savica Waterfall, where the water plunges dramatically into an emerald-green gorge – the source of both the lake and the river Sava Bohinjka.

We also recommend taking the cable car up to Mount Vogel (1532 m above sea level). Panoramic view towards, among others, Mount Triglav (2864 m above sea level) – Slovenia's national mountain.
