Join us for a hiking trip along the Algarve's beautiful coast! Here, sun, sea, and leisurely stages between small fishing villages, lagoons, and cliffs are combined. An active week where you get to experience the best of Portugal's south coast – at your own pace.
You hike through the Ria Formosa Nature Park with its diverse birdlife, see the salt pans where fleur de sel is still harvested by hand, and end the trip at the famous Seven Hanging Valleys trail. Along the way, you stay comfortably, eat well, and experience Portugal at its best.
Expa Travel and our partners organize the trip – you complete it on your own. The trip lasts for 8 days / 7 nights, with daily stages of 12–20 km. Luggage is transported between accommodations, and transport is included to and from the starting point of the stages. A week filled with activity, culture, and a true vacation feeling.
The tour starts on the eastern side of the Algarve, where you walk along quiet paths near the coast. Along the way, you pass small fishing villages, sand dunes, and traditional salt pans. This is where fleur de sel is made - the exclusive sea salt harvested by hand and considered a delicacy in Portugal.
Furthermore, you walk through the Ria Formosa Nature Park - an area of lagoons, wetlands, and islands, known for its rich birdlife and green landscapes.
As you move westwards, the terrain changes. The beaches become wider, the cliffs higher, and the views more dramatic. The last few days you follow trails along the coast, with panoramic views of the ocean, before finishing with the highlight - the spectacular Seven Hanging Valleys trail. Here, cliffs, caves, and small coves await you, before you round off the trip in the pleasant coastal town of Carvoeiro.
The trip is suitable for those who like to be active without stress. It is also well-suited for families with older children who want to combine activity, comfort, and warm days by the sea.

Welcome to sunny Algarve! You will be met at the airport in Faro and driven to the pleasant coastal town of Tavira. The town is considered one of the most beautiful in the region, with cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses, and a peaceful atmosphere.
Take a stroll through the old town, see the Roman bridge, and enjoy the view from the castle ruins – a perfect start to the trip.
After breakfast, at 09:00, you will be driven to the small village of Praia do Camilo – one of Algarve's most charming places. From here, you walk towards Tavira along paths that wind past sand dunes and wetlands.
You pass the old fishing village of Cabanas and see how the salt pans are still operated by hand. Keep an eye out for flamingos and herons – they thrive here.

Transfer from Tavira to Cacela Velha is included.
The day starts with transport to the village of Junqueira at 09:00, where you follow the beautiful Guadiana route towards the border with Spain. The trip offers both nature and history – you pass lush wetlands, small farms, and the old castle in Castro Marim. From here, you continue towards the lively border town of Vila Real de Santo António, where street life and the symmetrical squares reminiscent of Lisbon in miniature. A perfect place for a coffee in the sun before you return to Tavira. Tavira is most easily reached by train (ticket not included).

Today's stage starts in the charming fishing village of Fuseta, which you can easily reach by train from Tavira (approx. 15 min walk to the station, ticket not included).
You follow the path along the lagoon in Ria Formosa Natural Park, one of Portugal's most fascinating wetland areas. Here, the landscape alternates between sandbanks, small islands, and still waters. Along the way, you see fishermen, birds, and salt workers in full activity – a glimpse of the real Algarve.
Back in Tavira, you can enjoy a well-deserved dinner at a local restaurant.

The trip starts with a transfer to Pontal. From there, you follow the path through the Ria Formosa area, one of Algarve's most characteristic coastal landscapes. The route goes along sand dunes and lagoons, with open sections and clear paths that make this a smooth and nice walking day.
Towards the end, you approach the long wooden bridge at Quinta do Lago, which leads you over an area of wide beaches and a more open coastal landscape. Here you get a clear transition from lagoons to the ocean.
After the stage, you will be picked up and driven to accommodation near Carvoeiro. In the evening, you can take a walk in the area before dinner on your own (not included).
After breakfast, transport departs at 09:00 from Carvoeiro to Ferragudo.
This day offers one of the most spectacular parts of the trip. You follow paths along the cliffs between Ferragudo and Carvoeiro, where the sea has shaped caves, arches, and small coves.
The view is incredible, and on clear days you can see all the way to Sagres. Along the way, you pass Torre da Lapa – an old watchtower from the 16th century – and Leixão da Gaivota, a protected bird area. A day of both history and raw coastal landscape.
Dinner can be enjoyed at one of the restaurants in Carvoeiro (not included).
The finale of the trip – the legendary Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, voted Europe's best walking route. You walk along the cliffs, past small paradise beaches and natural caves. The seven valleys have been shaped by rivers and erosion over thousands of years, creating a dramatic and beautiful landscape.
If you want an extra experience, you can take a boat trip to the famous Benagil Cave – one of Algarve's most iconic sites (not included).
