Hiking tips: Lake Maggiore

Lago Maggiore - one of Italy's most beautiful lakes

Lago Maggiore is one of Italy's most impressive lakes – a whole 65 km long, up to 10 km wide, and with a maximum depth of 372 meters, making it the country's second deepest lake.

The lake is located in northern Italy and stretches through Piedmont and Lombardy, and all the way up into Switzerland.

Perfect location - easy to travel to

Geographically, Lago Maggiore is perfectly situated:

  • Nearest airport: Milan Malpensa Airport

  • Milan city center is approx. 1.5 hours away by car or train

  • Turin is approx. 1.5–2 hours away

  • From the Swiss border, you reach Lugano in approx. 45 min.

This makes the area both accessible and easy to combine with other parts of Northern Italy.

The meeting of the green mountainsides and the clear lake water creates a landscape that is both dramatic and relaxing at the same time. There are palm trees by the water's edge, vineyards on the hillsides, and snow-capped Alpine peaks resting on the horizon.

The Borromean Islands – rich history and blooming beauty

In the middle of the lake lie the iconic Borromean Islands, which for several centuries have belonged to the noble Borromeo family. The most famous are:

  • Isola Bella, dominated by the elegant Palazzo Borromeo and a garden park that is often described as one of the most beautiful in the country

  • Isola dei Pescatori, a small and lively fishing village with pleasant restaurants and narrow alleys

  • Isola Madre, known for its botanical garden with exotic plants and birdlife

Driving around the entire lake takes approximately 3–3.5 hours without stopping. Most people like to spend a whole day – there are many viewpoints, small towns, and markets that tempt you along the way.

Typical food from the area

The local food is a blend of mountain traditions, freshwater fish, and Piedmont-inspired specialties:

  • Freshwater fish such as trout, whitefish, and perch

  • Risotto al pesce persico (perch risotto)

  • Polenta and stews

  • Local cheeses like Bettelmatt

  • Elegant wines from nearby Gattinara

The towns around the lake – such as Stresa, Verbania, Ghiffa, and Cannobio – offer cozy promenades along the lake, markets, small shops, piazzas, and restaurants serving local food with views of Lago Maggiore.
